Aaaaaaaand my wife and I have decided to name him HENRY. I know that it has nothing to do with cars, but I really liked the name. Nicknames will be "Special Agent Hank" (Breaking Bad) and "Hank the Tank"!BME_Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14459072318926273208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5462363436657295608.post-53585197910220568382013-11-01T09:18:00.001-05:002013-11-01T09:18:39.576-05:00My New Co-Driver... The Battle PuppyTwo weeks ago, my wife and I put down a deposit on a 36-hour-old yellow English Labrador Retriever puppy. So it looks like as of December 14 (the day we pick him up!) I will have a new co-driver. He's going to be a big boy, with his dad weighing in at 83lbs.<br />
<br />
Here are the first pictures of him from yesterday, at only 13 days old.<br />

Racing.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
10/19/13 was the SMF debut for the BME #618 car. Even though it is the end of the season and the car will more than likely be stored until March, I wanted to get it out on the course to see what it could do. Check the handling characteristics, the response, powerband, etc. Simply put, the car won SMF out of 5 drivers in its class and placed 20th raw out of 64; 25th in PAX. While I was quite happy with the end result, there is still a lot of work to be done...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The car's entire setup is set to be a loose SMF competitor. And when I say loose, I mean LOOSE. Any amount of lift on a turn will swing the tail out, and it's going to take a lot of practice to really hammer down my technique and learn how to properly drive the car. There may be some setup tweaks for next season; added negative camber in the rear, disconnect the RSB for cold/wet days, etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I was extremely proud of the car and its capabilities. I look forward to pushing it a lot harder next season! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Enjoy the media!</div>

While I was doing some last minute checks on the car before this weekend's event, I noticed that both of my outer tie rods were destroyed. Yesterday during my lunch, I ran to AutoZone and picked up both driver and passenger side Duralast Outer Tie Rods. The products are OEM replacements, and carry a Lifetime Warranty. The warranty covers everything from bent parts to boot tearing.<br />

I was covered in oil and grease, and I didn't want to get it all over my DSLR so I used my 3-year-old iPhone 4**<br />
<br />
Amsoil Z-Rod Engine Oil... Check!<br />
Amsoil Series 600 Brake Fluid... Check!<br />
...<br />
Amsoil Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid... Check!<br />
<br />
I wanted to get the car in the air before this weekend's event to give it a once-over to check for any fluid leaks, loose bolts, etc.<br />
<br />
The FSB hadn't been tightened properly when I installed the dampers, so I was getting a TON of noise out of it over bumps. So I took care of that issue quickly.<br />
<br />
*Remember to complete the endlink tightening process with the suspension compressed.<br />
<br />
<br />
As for the transmission fluid, this job is pretty easy if you have a hand vacuum pump for the fluid fill. You can pick one up at Harbor Freight for ~$10, and it's well worth it.<br />
<br />
The job itself is pretty straight forward... Drain from the lower plug, and fill from the upper plug until the fluid starts to drip out from the fill hole. Although somehow, every time I do fluid changes I end up looking like a Dothraki slave girl after a long night with the King's Men...<br />
<br />
.... Anyway... Here are some pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And I think this outer tie rod needs to be replaced... I guess I know what I'll be doing tonight.<br />

Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?This past weekend, I was forced to replace my old Spoon intake elbow due to the broken mounting tab leaving a nice sized hole in my intake... This was not good, and led to considerable losses during tuning. My tuner, Mikey, bolted up just a plain old aluminum tube to see what kind of losses we were seeing due to the restrictive/hole-y setup, and we gained 7whp! Zero tuning change, simply run-over-run...<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This past weekend, the CTR received its new intake and I had the joy of installing it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The intake of choice, against the pleas of my tuner at ProFunction since the intake had already been ordered, was the Password:JDM Power Chamber. I must admit that I was a little bit intrigued by this... Throbbing whale-****, monstrosity of an intake. Regardless of the performance, I can say with much assurance that my car is rocking a jones that has far more girth than your's.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ok let's get to it... The intake itself looks decent in person, but the construction is very thin and multiple times through the installation I thought that it was going to crumble in my hands. I wish that they would've at least done one more kevlar overlay with an overlapping seam to give it a little more rigidity, but hey I'm not the one making the thing... They did short me by a hose clamp and about 3" of tubing in the kit, as well, luckily I have hundreds of random old parts from all of my previous cars laying around the garage so I was able to scrounge up what I needed to finish the install.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0082_zps5bffc6f4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0082_zps5bffc6f4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The size of the fatty intake made it difficult to get lined up properly and took a couple of shots at it. I also had to trim about 1/4" off of reducing coupler in order to get the intake to sit near-flush with the entry of the 70mm throttle body.</div>
<div>

In order to improve the cold air flow to the intake, I had to route some tubing from the front bumper to a hole near the fender... Problem is that not all 96-00 civics come pre-cut with the hold. So $15 at home depot later, I found myself drilling at my car's frame with a 2 1/2" hole saw drill attachment.</div>

Now I just need to figure out the best way for running the heatshield...</div>

Part 1With my new intake scheduled to be delivered this Friday, I got started on the custom BME intake heat shield and box. I want to make sure to give the intake the best chance at performance. Today after work, I created a template out of cardboard, and mocked it up completely in the bay. Obviously the heat shield design will need to be tweaked once the intake arrives and I see the fitment. But I am confident that this should be a great start!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0082_zps10739495.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0082_zps10739495.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0108_zps345ceefd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0108_zps345ceefd.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0109_zps03e24431.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0109_zps03e24431.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0110_zpsdb5b6c60.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0110_zpsdb5b6c60.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0114_zpscbff761a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0114_zpscbff761a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Once this piece is cut out of the sheet metal, the fender-side will be sprayed down with high temp black paint and the engine side will be covered in heat reflective gold tape. The edges will be finished with rubber piping. The top will be sealed off with plexiglass; this will allow me to visually inspect the full setup, and make for simple maintenance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0117_zps4be39539.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/DSC_0117_zps4be39539.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So now that the template is complete, I have to start planning for how the ducting will work on the cold air feed. Since the non-B16 civics don't seem to come with the hole into the fender-well, I need to use a hole saw to cut a 2-3/8" hole into the frame where circled below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/6ffef5d9-68be-43be-9bbb-e04f635a83cc_zps388887e9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Installs%20and%20Maint/Intake%20Design/6ffef5d9-68be-43be-9bbb-e04f635a83cc_zps388887e9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The cold air feed will route to the bumper and draw air as shown below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

That's all for now!BME_Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14459072318926273208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5462363436657295608.post-64133003275881454002013-10-07T16:18:00.000-05:002013-10-07T16:18:01.097-05:00Good Meet & Good MeatFor those of you who have been following my journal on EK9.org or IWSTI, I apologize for some of the repeat content. Since I haven't been keeping up with the blog, I will be incorporating some older items that have already been posted in my journals in order to bring bloggers up to speed, and to add CTR content to this page.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Two weekends ago, I decided to meet up with an old friend that I haven't seen in well over 6 years. We met up at one of the local Car Meets with a club that runs weekly gatherings; this was the last event of the year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall I had a good time checking out the different cars that were there. A LOT of classic American cars from the middle of the 20th century, and my little B16 was nestled between a nice pack of Mustangs. For those who follow EK9.org on Facebook, you might remember one of the below pictures from one of last week's daily postings.</div>

<div>
Anyway, here are the pictures from the event!</div>

Some of the other cars at the event...</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And now for the Meat... I was trying to impress some guests who were coming over for a BBQ a few weeks back, so I took some special actions during the prep process of the pork spare ribs.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- I punctured the meat with a fork in several areas, and poured Left Hand Brewing's Black Jack Porter into the tray.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/photo_zps79004a39.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/photo_zps79004a39.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/photo_zpse878bcfa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/photo_zpse878bcfa.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- I let the ribs sit in the beer-inade overnight, to soak it up nice. Then applied a liberal amount of my homemade Kansas-Style dry rub to them. I let that sit overnight.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- The next day I set the oven to 250* F and let the meat cook nice and slow for about 4 hours. Here they are after removing them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0073_zps155c49ac.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0073_zps155c49ac.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- I also prepared some chicken breasts with the dry rub and cooked them in a similar fashion!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0074_zps7623bd16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0074_zps7623bd16.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- And I made some Baked Mac n Cheese... $10 worth of cheese in this bad boy! (Sharp Cheddar and Gruyere)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0075_zpsd81bc7fc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0075_zpsd81bc7fc.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- I then threw the ribs onto the grill to give them a nice bark. I'll admit, I did leave them on slightly too long since I was trying to time the mac n cheese to be ready at the same time. They still turned out fantastic, though!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0079_zps73344ac4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0079_zps73344ac4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

Who Doesn't Love Beer? (and camber)One my my hobbies (aside from cars, of course...) is BEER. Being a resident of one of the greatest cities in the US lends itself to some of the greatest craft brews you can imagine. While the blog is heavily based around cars, I plan to integrate some interesting craft brewed beers, as well. (...and maybe even a little bit of food every now and then)<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0044_zps14aaaadd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/Non-Car/DSC_0044_zps14aaaadd.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is a seasonal craft beer from the well-known Southern Tier Brewing Company... Pumking. This is a super tasty beer, unlike anything that I had really tasted prior to this. Everyone has had your typical "Sam Adams-Style" Octoberfest beers, but this is something different. Brewed with pumpkins, this beer has an intense flavor of cinnamon, cloves, and pumpkins that you can not only taste, but SMELL. From the moment that you pop the cap, you can smell the aroma just like pumpkin pie. It really brings me back to my Halloween childhood; I even got a flashback to when I dressed up as one of the Street Sharks.</div>
<div>

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. If you're looking for something festive to bring to a fall party, grab a 22 oz. bomber of Pumking by Southern Tier. You shant be disappointed!</div>

Two weeks ago, I finally built up the energy to install my new Skunk2 front camber kit. Overall, the quality of the kit seems amazing. The powdercoat is fresh, the kit comes with a certificate of authenticity, and the fitment was spot-on.</div>

After a full alignment, the shop was able to get -3.2* camber up front, -1.7* camber in the rear (2 washers) and zero toe all around. I'm really happy with the results, and the car feels like it drives on rails. Turning is unreal, zero understeer and the car just goes. The engine and the suspension complement each other perfectly in that everything is just. so. damn. responsive... The car is a blast, and the first autocross event is slated for 10/19, so stay tuned!</div>

Pat has split off and started his own venture in Cincinnati, OH (<a href="https://www.facebook.com/AllSpeedInnovations" target="_blank">All Speed Innovations</a>) and I have chosen to stick with racing and modding cars as a hobby in a different Midwestern state ;). This was not a painful separation, so please be sure to check out ASI and give the new shop the support they deserve! They do some excellent work over there, and you'd be bringing your car to a shop that truly cares about the performance of your vehicle.<br />

For those of you who might be wondering what I have been up to and the future of Battle Monkey Enterprises, there have been some pretty BIG changes. Back in July, I made the decision to sell my 2007 Subaru WRX in favor of a full spec B16B EK9 Civic Type R replica. This was by no means an easy decision, that took months of thought and planning. With the current state of the WRX, there were just too many things left on my list of completion that I was not able to see happening; mainly the issues with the WRX drivetrain. In order to reach my goals with the WRX, it would've required a complete STI 6-speed and 5x114 hub swap, along with 3 new aftermarket differentials. While these were not the only things that led me to sell this car, they were certainly a big factor. So, let's take a brief moment of silence to pay our respects to the Original Battle Monkey...<br />
<br />
(Silence)<br />
<br />
Now... For the new era of Battle Monkey! Here is what I will be working with going forward...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/DSC_0376_zps7dff2719.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p645/sixeighteenctr/DSC_0376_zps7dff2719.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The EK9 Type R is one of those cars that I have always wanted to own... Classic styling, High revving NA Engine, lightweight, double wishbone suspension, simple, and easy to work on. I had been mapping out the cost for a full build on the Beater Hatch, when I stumbled across this gem on the forums. At a fraction of the cost of a full conversion, this car was a steal. And trust me, it is CLEANNNN. It is a blast to drive, and shifting at 9,000+ rpm's is an experience that not many Subaru owners will ever have. (Not in a Subaru, anyway)<br />
<br />
The plan for this car is to be a clean, fully LHD-version of the coveted EK9 only released in Japan. It is not going to be a trailer queen; this car will see autocross, track days, drag strips, and maybe even a couple of shows from time to time. I don't plan for it to be a national SCCA or NASA competitor, but it should be one hell of a regional car!<br />
<br />
Some of the goodies that car is currently equipped with (full mod list located <a href="http://www.battlemonkeyenterprises.com/p/team-cars.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>);<br />
- B16B engine with S4C LSD Transmission<br />
- Koni Yellow Dampers with Ground Control Coilover Sleeve Kit (400lb/500lb)<br />
- Skunk2 Front Camber Kit (-3.2/-1.7 camber, zero toe)<br />
- 5x114.3 Hub Conversion with f/r ITR Disk Brakes<br />
- Complete EK9 Interior/Exterior<br />
- 205/50/15 BFG Rivals<br />
- And a handful of other goodies<br />
<br />
Keep your eyes open for event updates, parts installations, and more pictures! The car's first autocross event is set for 10/19/13!<br />

I figured that I would post up a full album today. I felt like listening to some old school Mudvayne, so here is L.D. 50.<br />

Greetings from Illinois, where it is (somehow) in the 60's today! Extremely atypical for us this time of year, but who am I to complain? I'll take it! Although tomorrow we are back to reality in the teens... Anyway, here's some music.<br />
<br />
"Simple Math" by Manchester Orchestra<br />

This song is by a band called Pinback. They're a very mellow, earthy trio that makes some absolutely great music. I've seen them play live twice now, and have yet to be disappointed. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do!<br />

"EVO LOL" and "PFFT STI" license plates are commonplace in the racing scene. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with a little rivalry... It creates great competition and pushes both sides to improve. At BME, we support any platform that has a great racing heritage; and the Mitsubishi Evolution is no exception.
Take for example, Sam's new 2006 Wicked White Evo MR. Sam has been in the Evo scene ever since he bought his black GSR back in 2006. It was minty, with just 3 miles on it when he picked it up from the dealer. Sam and his Evo have gone through many, many changes over the years. The idea was to build the best autocross machine possible, while never compromising its daily-driveability. I can speak first-hand when I say that this guy is nothing less than a perfectionist when it comes to his cars. We go way back to college days, and even started a racing league in Central Illinois that we ran successfully for a couple of years. But geographical constraints forced us to shut it down. <i>GRM Article below.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://imageshack.us/a/img833/8162/icaxl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://imageshack.us/a/img833/8162/icaxl.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Sam has been searching the used market for a fresh wicked white MR for about 6 months now. I honestly can't believe all that he has gone through to get this car... He finally picked one up in Cincinnati 2 weeks ago, and it was definitely worth the long search. With just 22,xxx miles on the odometer and not a single door ding, this thing is an absolute gem. We expect nothing but perfection when it comes to the build of Sam's new machine, and BME is proud to be able to get our hands dirty with it. While our shop operations are handled out of the Cincinnati-region, we will be meeting Sam in the Chicago suburbs to handle the work that he needs done. We consider it a small price to pay to work on perhaps one of the cleanest Evo IX's left in the scene.<br />
<br />
Here's a short list of the work we'll be completing;<br />
<br />
- Ohlins DFV Coilovers onto the WW Evo<br />
- Swapping out his MR Suspension from the Black Evo<br />
- DW300 Fuel Pump<br />
- Buschur JDM-fit Catback Exhaust<br />
- Authentic JDM Rear Bumper Cover & JDM IX Taillights<br />
- Front & Rear Crash Beams<br />
- Buschur Quick-Release Harness Bar<br />
- ACD Computer, Coil On Packs, and a handful of bushings<br />
<br />

I figure that this will be a nice addition to the team, and will help us capture some great moments working on the cars. I'm excited to start messing around with it! Unfortunately, I haven't ordered an SD card yet, so I can't use it until that gets here...<br />
<br />
Anyway, here are some pictures of the new hardware.<br />

It has been quite some time since we've made any updates, and I apologize. The last few months have been hectic between me planning my wedding and searching for a new home. Pat also has accepted a job with Turn In Concepts and is now working there. He has officially gotten out of corporate America. Lucky bastard...<br />
<br />
Anyway... I was able to pick up a nice little daily driver and put the AutoX WRX into storage for 2013.<br />
<br />
Meet Layla, the scrappy little 1997 EK hatch. She had about 98k miles on her when I brought her home. The car is really fun to drive, and I have some future plans for a full LHD EK9 CTR conversion. But that must wait until the WRX is complete. As a California car, the paint is in really rough shape, but the interior is pristine. Mechanically it runs great.<br />
<br />
Pat should be posting up the latest on the TT STI shortly. He has been super busy working on the TIC shop and customer cars, but has still been doing some awesome things. <br />

Ok, after that comment this may not exactly be what you were expecting to find. Although I promise that it is pretty damn sexy...<br />

Helping to put the power to the ground in the STI is Competition Clutch's new twin disc clutch kit with hydraulic throw out bearing conversion. Of course, we couldn't just receive this gorgeous kit and leave it assembled... So we're going to take you through full disassembly to show you exactly what is included in this package.<br />

<br />
"...this was ordered just about 7 months ago and was sitting around a shop
for 5 months to be used in development of some parts ... 5 months of
sitting around and no work done so here it finally is in my possession.
The turbo is an FP HTA82 ... aka FP's version of the GTX3582. As you can
see I opted for the Tial .82AR turbine housing. I actually had to pay
more than I originally agreed to so that this Tial housing could be
rushed out of back order ... little did I know the turbo would sit
around doing nothing for 5 months. For people who don't know how big a
35R is, I felt the NOS can would be a good size reference. I am pretty
excited to get this thing spinning and see what it can do, it should
move plenty of air for what I want to do..." -BME_Pat from his IWSTI journal<br />
<br />
We're excited to have this, to say the least. Even with the setbacks, we're confident that the build will turn out being even greater than previously planned. We're going to try and do something that not many people have done with the GR. Hell, maybe a BME low mount turbo kit could be released as a result.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
*NOS Energy Drink was only used for size reference, in no way is BME affiliated with, or claiming to be affiliated with NOS Energy Drinks. Although, NOS, if you're reading this, we wouldn't mind a drink sponsorship ;) We could use the caffeine with the long nights that we have ahead of us!<br />

<br />
It's been a little while since we've updated you on the status of our STI build. We've had some disappointing setbacks with shipping delays, and now it looks like the turbo and intercooler setup are going to be a full custom kit designed by Pat @ BME. We're thinking v-mount FMIC with a low mount turbo maybe? Although we're having some trouble finding a radiator company willing to make us a proper radiator with angled fins...<br />
<br />
Anyway, Pat's been busy prepping all of the new AN fittings are getting them slapped on the motor. All parts used in this build are provided by Fragola. The quality of their products is really top-notch. Everything from their fittings to their hoses have been outstanding. We will also be using the high quality products of Fragola with our BME catch can kits, keep an eye out for that soon, too!<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures to hold you over...<br />

<br />
Of course we're not dead, just busy! Between setting up some upcoming product releases, working out the kinks on our STI build, and planning a new suspension overhaul on the WRX, we haven't had a whole lot of time to post song of the day. We apologize, but we promise that we will be back to normalcy in the next few days.<br />
<br />
Anyway... I thought that we would share with you the latest on the AutoX WRX's new suspension revamp planning.<br />
<br />
The car just recently turned the ticker on 70k miles. To say the least, the current suspension has needed to be replaced for a looong time now. But last season a blown motor changed the upgrade progression. Now that we've made it through the 2012 season, we figured that this winter would be a great time to begin the overhaul. Once all of the pieces have been collected, I assume Pat and I will spend a 3 or 4 day weekend with a couple cases of good beer pulling everything apart and putting it back together. Chicago winters have been less than kind, and everything needs to be sanded, re-coated, re-greased, and re-assembled.<br />
<br />
So far, here is the list of what is needed and what needs to be done...<br />
<br />
AST 4100 Coilovers (8k/7k Swift Springs)<br />
MSI Street Front Camber Plates<br />
BME Solid Rear Top Mounts w/ Built in Negative Camber<br />
Aluminum STI Control Arms<br />
MSI Trailing Arms w/ TIC Bushings<br />
Stoptech SS Brake Lines<br />
Kartboy Toe Lock Bolts<br />
ARP Extended Wheel Studs<br />
Muteki SR48 Extended Lug Nuts<br />
Kartboy Front Endlinks<br />
Replacement Rear Subframe<br />
Replacement Whiteline Ball Joints<br />
Fresh Camber Bolts <br />
Torque Solution Transmission Mount<br />
Sand and paint all pieces that will be retained...<br />
<br />
Now for some pictures of goodies... We received these last week, they were bought used off of Nasioc but the deal was too good to pass and the condition is outstanding. Budget is important, and at BME we're all about getting the best parts at the best prices. The same goes with the parts that we offer, with no disregard to quality and function, of course!<br />

With the recent move, it was difficult to set aside the time to go out for an event. Now that I'm pretty situated, I was able to look into upcoming events and link up in my old stomping grounds.<br />
<br />
The event was hosting by the Champaign County Sports Car Club (CCSCC). The event was CARmageddon 2012, which was a two-day event consisting of some great competition. CCSCC has been around for more than 50 years, with some of the most dedicated members I've ever encountered. The club is having an amazing year, posting record numbers at just about every event this year.<br />
<br />
The WRX engine and braking felt great both days of the event. Acceleration was exactly what I had hoped out of the mighty little 68HTA turbo, and the brake did a great job of slowing the car down when I mashed on them. The newest addition to the brakes setup is a TIC MBC Brace, which provided a day/night difference in pedal feel and brake response. No more "wet sponge" feel when hitting the brakes. One thing that still needs attention is the car's suspension. With the corner speed capabilities of the vehicle and RS3's, I really need a higher spring rate and better damping. The obvious choices for upgrade are AST and JRZ. Although, the premium cost of JRZ Suspension may be a little bit hard to justify for the AutoX WRX at this time. AST 4150's will probably be the weapon of choice for the 2013 season.<br />
<br />
Another thing that hurt my performance at the event was the rear swaybar. When we replaced the old Perrin endlinks with Kartboy, I decided to put the rsb at the stiffest setting. This was my first event with it like this, and the car was far too tail happy. I believe I spun the car 6 times over the course of the weekend... Anyone who is an avid autocrosser knows that you just can't be competitive when you're flushing half of your runs for something like this.<br />
<br />
Anyway, enough rambling and onto some pictures... Thanks to Kevin V. from the Illinois Auto Club for taking these.<br />

<br />
Here's something a little more relaxed to listen to. It's mid-week, and only one more full work day until my day off on Friday and trip to Champaign, IL for an autocross weekend! Reviews on the event(s) will be posted sometime next week, and should include some videos and pictures.<br />
<br />
In BME land, development on our new products is moving along, and we're VERY excited to have received the first prototype of our Race version catch can! We expect to roll out several group buys in the coming months, so keep an eye out for those! We have also been working hard to convert all of our logos into vector format, which will allow us to print vinyl in any size we need, quickly and easily!<br />

I just spent the last few hours working on a vinyl design for a client, then converting our battle monkey head logo into vector format. I really enjoy doing this more than finance... Anyway, here is some music to jam to.<br />
